This
is an outline by the US Coast Guard for recreational
boats (these requirements are minimums and do not guarantee
the safety of the boat and its passengers).
[1] Life Jackets and a throwable type IV device
[2] Fire Extinguishers
[3] Flares - (visual distress signals) or non-pyrotechnic
signals distress flag and S.O.S. light
[4] Horns - (sound producing devices)
[5] Navigation Lights
[6] Marine Sanitation Devices - vessels under 65' must
have type 1, 11, or 111 MSD
[7] Ventilation - boats built after 7/31/1980 with
enclosed gasoline engine or gas tank spaces must have
a powered ventilation system that meet USCG standards. This
includes permanent electric blowers.
This
is a starting point, these requirements are
minimums. You should carry additional safety gear appropriate
for your boat. Be sure to consult your state and local regulations
for equipment requirements above and beyond the federal requirements.
